Joaquim S. Marques was born in 1972 in Frankfurt (Germany). He studied at the Offenbach School of Arts and Design, Germany with Prof. Adam Jankowkski (1990-94) and at the Frankfurt School of Fine Arts with Prof. Thomas Bayrle (1994-95), where he finished his degree in Visual Arts. He obtained a grant from the Johannes Mosbach Foundation in 1994 and from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst in 1998. That same year, he settled in Portugal. In 2001/2002 he studied Painting with Prof. Castro Caldas at the Centro de Arte & Comunicação Visual in Lisbon. Between 2013 and 2016, he lived and worked in Brazil. In 2015 he and the Brazilian artist Letícia Barreto created the artistic duo Pocket Entropy, collaborating on various projects since then. Return to Portugal in early 2017. That same year he was artist in residence at MArt in Lisbon. Selected for the 12th edition of the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Prize in 2020 in Amarante. In 2021 he was artist in residence at the 5th International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Guarda and at VIARCO in São João da Madeira and took part in the International Art Biennale of Gaia.

Joaquim S. Marques lives and works in Lisbon.
