Beyond Matter

“Landscapes have a material existence, and yet reach also in a spiritual domain.”

(Zong Bing, 375 – 443, author of the earliest text on landscape painting)

“It's like when we would try to understand our existence through the landscapes.”

(Werner Herzog, German filmmaker)

Dreams, memories, and what we call reality are an intrinsic part of our existence.  Embarking on a journey with an unknown destination, I traverse inner landscapes in search of knowledge beyond mere beauty and appearance. Science (and some Eastern religions) tell us that all matter is energy.

Everything flows.

Evoking a dreamlike imaginary that, sometimes, refers to an oriental aesthetic, my watercolors invite to contemplate. I like to work on large-format papers lying on the floor, using a mop and duster to put water and paint. As I walk on top of the still-wet paper, I can observe and feel the image appearing beneath my feet on the paper. Time and space are diluted.

In watercolor (and in acrylic) I am interested in the unpredictability and randomness of water as a generator of fictional memories of landscapes that might exist somewhere. With the passing of time our memories tend to lose sharpness, getting lost in the edge of observable reality. The volatility of water transforms faded spots into dreamlike images of nature and allows white spaces to be left on the paper (or canvas) as if they were gaps in memory. Watercolor is, to paraphrase the writer Guimarães Rosa, working memory in its solid, liquid, and gaseous state.
